IMPORTANT CRAIGSLIST CHANGES!

Craigslist has changed its website so that emails are no longer direct between buyers and sellers.  For those of you selling on Craigslist, this new change means that any email from a potential buyer does not include their actual email address.  Instead, you will find a bunch of numbers and letters "@reply.craigslist.org".

For more information about this email-relay, please read the information from Craigslist itself: http://www.craigslist.org/about/help/email-relay

With this change, there is an additional tweak that will be very useful to the Craigslist community.  When a would-be scammer emails you, you can now flag that email via Craigslist.  At the very bottom of the email, you will see "If this email is a scam or spam please flag it now".  Simply click that link.  With enough flags, these individuals will be filtered out.  This is great news as it means that eventually these scammers have no incentive to keep going if they are continuously flagged by real users.

As always, please be cautious with the site as the new changes do not guarantee that all scammers are weeded out!

  1. I have gotten two emails in the past week from spammers saying "send me your email address" and "please respond to this gmail and not the CL address."
    Don't fall for this ruse!

    2. Of course it is spammers. What other reason would somebody ask you to respond to a non-CL email address other than to get your real email address?

NEVER send these guys your real email address.

    3. It's not a ruse.
I for one don't want to meet with someone to buy/sell without some legitimate info rather than hiding behind an anonymous handle. I'll show you mine if you show me yours, otherwise no deal.

    4. LOL, you think people can't hide behind a "real" email address?? I have all kinds of "fake" email addresses I use when I don't want people to know my "legitimate" information. I love this change. No more harvesting of my email for more spammers (and scammers).

  2. I am having trouble with the new craigslist email. I listed my house on craigslist since we are selling "by owner." However, when someone responds to my ad and I respond to his/her email, it is not going through. It doesn't pop up in my inbox until about a week later that the message was unable to send. Therefore, it looks like my post is a scam and that I don't respond. In my ads, I now ask for your email address, so I can respond to you. It has literally become a headache and I think this new craigslist email thing needs a lot of tweaking.

    3. Can you say in the ad contact by phone only? Masking your # from bots by spelling out a few of the numbers.

  3. When someone responds to my ad and I respond to his/her email -- I think it is going to his/her junk email - I have not heard from anyone after I replied to their email using the mail relay

  4. The new relay system also makes it hard to detect if people responding to your ad are legit.

I have not had one successful e mail communication exchange with anyone answering an ad since the e mail relay was implemented, so haven't been successful selling anything anymore.

  5. I hate this new anonymous email address change.

It was much better when buyers and sellers can communicate directly, without anonymous craigslist email addresses.

At least you had some idea of who you were dealing with. Now you have no idea.

This is one of the dumbest things Craiglist ever implemented.

I really hope they change it back to the old system.

    1. Really? You don't have a clue who you are dealing with just because of an email address. Tell me something about who I am. My email is madeup@yahoo.con I love the new system as I am getting about 80 emails in my spam folder every day because of craigslist scammers/spammers. I think the only ones complaining are the ones that now cannot sell email accounts!

      Delete
    2. Your response is stupid. The average person who uses craigslist to buy and sell good isn't dumb enough to invite someone into their home based on an email address alone. I always google their email address or the name on their email, then if it seems legit have them provide me their number for a clear record of interaction should anything happen. This anonymous system is scary as hell and removes the few bits of security users had.

    3. You can still post your e-mail or phone number in the description and use anonymous in the post settings. I have a separate e-mail account for CL buyers. If it ever gets spam bombed. I just create a new e-mail address to type in the description, but still use my original e-mail for posting.

      Delete
    4. I agree with the poster. I had more control over the responses I received before CL employed email anonymizers.
For example if I got an email from Garadene2187@yahoo.co.uk then I could do a check on the email address using google or a more specialised tool such as Email Ferret to expose possible scammers. Because of the nature of the scammer's work, one has to realise that the scammer doesn't delete or change his/her/it's email address very often. You're guaranteed a forum somewhere which points out that Garadene2187 for example has done this scam or that scam.

  6. I am having the same problem that I hear nothing from the potential buyer after I respond to their initial inquiry. This has happened with at least three different buyers. I sent an email to one of my own products and responded and it went to the junk box. BOO-HISS Craigslist! This is a waste of our time and of your business!

J,has CL responded to this problem?

  7. WARNING!!!!
there is a spammer that wants me to set up an account and give them my account info, so creigslist can send me a code for I to give to them so they will know that i am not a scam, before we meet up and finish the business transaction. sounded kinda fishy so i thought it was best to warn ppl about this. Not going to put the whole # but it was a 323 area code, and the caller can not recieve phone calls only text .

  9. Oh my god, is this what's been happening?
I have been selling on Craigslist for years, well since 2006(ish). Over Christmas holidays 2012 I put my sons old clothes up for sale because he had out grown them.
I didn't get one call, A boys clothing lot 58 pieces + 20 pr of smartwool socks + other additional boys stuff(backpack, kinex roller coaster kit w/directions all kinds of stuff)for 100$. No one. At the same time, I listed some stuff up there for free, RV stuff(heater,Hood vent ect..)left over from a rebuild I had just finished on our truck camper. No one. Silence.

Not once, had I ever posted an AD in the past that received NO calls.

2 months ago I listed our Truck Camper up for sale, as the re-build is now complete, and I have had 2 responses from 2 spammers. Not one legitimate call.
So tonight, after re-listing the TC "repost", I decided to google "Craigslist changing" and this is where I came to.
I was not aware of the changes to CL, this is a shame, so many people cant afford to pay for advertising for the smallest things.
I agree that it may be that the scammers have won. Too bad, that was nice for a really long time wasn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yes the spammers have won. The world ends and we all are doomed. Woe are we.

  11. The advantage to seeing people's real email address in their replies is you can determine quite a bit by seeing their email. An email address can look illegitimate for many reasons. Now CL has taken this away, and it doesn't work for me. It's leveled the playing field for scammers by camouflaging their often give-away email addresses.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Not only are the emails anonymized but the IP address of the user is also anon.

I had a user come onto my property and steal a couple hundred dollars worth of things about 1 week ago. They emailed me from the anonymized email address and confirmed it verbatim.

She claimed she'd return the items over the weekend and never showed up.

I could have had a much better chance of finding her without having the authorities involved if Craigslist had not changed the damn way things are done.

Now thieves and scammers get the upper hand.

  13. Overall, C-List sucks a$§ anymore. They seem to be making changes on a weekly basis. Their CSS for viewing the site on mobile devices needs MAJOR overhauling. If the post description is very long, it overlaps the image thumbnail for the next post, making it illedgible. The mapping for opening up a post is inconsistent on mobile devices. Many times, when you click on a category, the wrong one gets opened. And now, when you go to post something, you are presented with poorly styled "radio bittons" to select where your post is destined for; and the categories for where you want to post is incomplete.

Ive verified this from several different IP addresses and several different email login addresses.

CList is a very basic, database driven web application, infamous for bland styling. Yet with this very basic, text based user interface, they can't seem to get it right.

  14. This is really a stupid move on craigslists behalf.
I responded to a few adds and posted a few adds and my junk box is full of bs craigslist emails.
I'm just going to drop using craigslist and hit up backpage now.
And I have to trash my email because the junk mail from craigslist is unreal.

I I took down my post one month ago and spam ads are still responding.

  16. I think craigslist should just set up messaging within your post like a web forum so there is no email involved, or require a registration and a private mailbox withing craigslist (again like a web forum) and then you only get an email if someone leaves a message on craigslist. BOOM, no more spam!

  17. I like the anonymous relay system, it greatly reduces ending up on a spammer list if you respond to an ad.

I have a different problem: When someone responds to my ad, there is supposed to be a footer in the reply (links at the bottom) that allows me to flag them if they are spam. Someone has figured out how to send the reply while deleting that footer/links. Anyone know how they are doing this? Would like to have craigslist remediate this but need more data. Thanks.

  20. Craigslist was much better when you could actually see the email address, Mark as spam, junk or handle as real. Only a complete idiot who sends money to Nigeria is unable to weed out the very obvious spammer emails and now this system has indeed given the spammers yet another disguise. Before it was much easier to discern the spammers mostly by looking at the email addy itself, now this is impossible.

Users should be responsible to report flag delete Spam within their own isp and/or email services. Marking messages as spam on Craigslist is slow and time consuming. You need to open up a new Web page browser, wait to load, then pick a reason to flag, and wait again... Then u need to exit that browser page. Really? When cl is still allowing more spam than ever before who has time to flag all these replies? It was much better when I could just hit "spam" in my email system and often it would prevent it the next time around from reaching my inbox. Epic fail craiglist!

i had an email address I was using for my account for years and it just stopped working. I read that others had that same problem so i changed it, I made a new gmail account that was specifically for cragslist activity. now no matter what I listed or wrote about I only got spammers and scammers for replies. hunders a day all saying pretty much the same thing - that the person was interested in my item and they were even more interested in me personally and they all almost all attach a picture of some 1/2 to fully naked women professing her desire to screw me. LOl no kidding. hundreds of those a day.

so I ditched gmail. i went with my providers .net email and now it seems I cannot change the email that people reply to without totally ending all of my carefully listed stuff! hours on end of work. when i just edit or repost a listing that I created Before the change it still goes back to that old email address if anyone replies. and for some reason no legit emails ever get through.

  47. Whats worse is trying to change your email address on craigslist if you no longer have the same email address as it no longer exists. No business I do business with requires an email from the former address to change your email address on their accounts. Not sure if Ebay / Paypal does or not. I don't remember going through that but it could be possible they follow that policy too.

However not insurance company, not the 4 banks I use, and not the 4 brokerages I use. One can only assume that craigslist is either quite vulnerable to hacks that they follow this policy. I cannot find any information on how to forward existing account postings with their photos to the new account in any of their FAQ forums just jive statements regarding the email issue and how people already know from reading the rules. How absurd, and what a useless design. I will not be donating any money to keep craiglist around.

I'd like to take the opportunity to invite you to place your classified ads on my website It's a new site based in Cape Girardeau and its 100% free. If you are like me I have been using Craigslist for years, and lately with the amount of spam, fake ads and criminals posting bogus scams, I thought it was time for a new approach. My site is mobile friendly and I police the site well. It's very easy to sign up via Facebook and Google, and share your links on your favorite social media groups by simply pasting the link in feeds, or using the share links Immediately after posting. I will never spam you and if you find an inappropriate ad I may have missed just flag it and the ad will be removed and the user banned, permanently. If your category is not listed just email me and I will create it. Thanks for your time in reading this and I hope you'll place some ads and enjoy a safe, secure and user friendly way to sell your stuff or advertise your business.
