These bastards even have phone numbers now!

So yesterday, I received a typical scam email from  "steven hart" - stevenhart504@gmail.com:

--

    Is this still for sale

(864) 660-9530

(Of course it's still for sale. If it wasn't, why would the ad still be up?)

I noticed the phone number found in the signature.  A phone number!  The scammers are now including phone numbers to seem more legitimate.

Of course I called it.  As expected, no one picks up.  I leave a voicemail.  It becomes clear that this is a Google Voice number.  It's easy to see why scammers would utilize Google Voice because it offers phone numbers that can be managed completely online (e.g., telephone calls, text messages, voicemails, etc.).  That's not to say that everyone with a Google Voice number is illegitimate or a scammer.  I mean, I use Google Voice.

___________________________________________

A few hours later, I get an email from another scammer.  This one goes by the name of "thomas stone" - thomasstone62@gmail.com.  He writes:

--
are u still selling this? if yes, drop in your mobile number so i can send you a text and if not reply back

I know it's a scam, but interested to see where this would go, I send him an email back with my mobile number.  He texts me from 765-335-5668 with the following message:

is your    (COPY AND PASTED TITLE FROM CRAIGSLIST) still up for sale?

I reply back with some expletives.

Basically, this shows us that they're using the same scam they've been pulling through email, but now they've learned to use text messaging through Google Voice.  Hooray!  /s

I hope this helps others from getting conned.  If you find any other phone numbers being used by these fools, please feel free to include them in the comments.

Lastly, wishing readers a very Happy Thanksgiving.  I hope you all have a wonderful day with friends and family.  If someone asks you to ship a part of your turkey because they are currently a doctor on business in West Africa, I highly suggest you don't.  ;)

    1. Sorry to hear that you've had so many scammers. Think of it this way- luckily, you're aware that they're out there. Imagine those of us who don't even know... :(

    2. Those who don't know...you mean idiots? People have been scamming others since well before the internet was started. If you give out personal information and then listen to a strangers instructions, yes, you're an idiot who was just scammed. Sorry, but it's true. You don't see any geniuses sending money to Nigeria or entering a code on the phone for a stranger at their request.

    5. Hello - yesterday my FB account appears to have been hacked and all of my friends received a friend request confirmation. One friend who confirmed then received a text message indicating I was out of town, had changed my number, and had one a lottery that this person could also cash in on. She was given two numbers, both of which I called and left messages on, and a name - Mary Jane Walton (really?) 516-669-8371 and 662-626-6021. I'm not sure how the scammers got into my Facebook but it's all very disturbing. Be on the lookout for this type of scam!

    1. As far as I know, they send you a bogus money order or check. They then tell you that their "accountant" or "assistant" made some sort of error and made the amount for too much. They tell you to keep 50 bucks or whatever for your inconvenience and please send the difference via Western Union back to them. The check looks legit, you cash it, and then you get a call from your bank and your screwed. How anyone falls for the scam is sort of a mystery to me, but there are a lot of suckers out there.

    2. I recently started looking at used cars on craigslist because mine is on its last leg. I keep finding deals to good to be true. I know they r scams.when I call the phone numbers it goes to a text now subscriber voice mail. What kind of scam r they running by advertising cars for sale?

    5. The scammer listing that is "too good to be true" vehicle for sale are trying to get you to pay them with Vanilla Prepaid cards through eBay. You find the listing on Craigslist which looks like it could be in your local area. Call and leave a message on the Text Now number. They then text and send email with some sort of sob story most of the time praying on people's heart strings about being in the military, having to be deployed quickly and needing to sell quickly. They then send a very official looking invoice from eBay instructing you how to pay with Vanilla Prepaid cards and telling you where you can purchase those. Some people do fall for this I am sure. But as we know, you can't pay through eBay with a listing on Craigslist. The listing is not on eBay at all and eBay does not accept Vanilla Prepaid cards as an official payment. They get you to call them back with the numbers on those prepaid cards and they have all the information to use that money from those cards any way they choose specifically online and you lose, no vehicle, lost money! Total scammers. Then they will start texting strange things from very similar numbers with the last 4 of the phone number rearranged. It's amazing what these scammers try to do and sad that so many fall for this. Happened to a family member, luckily they were smart enough to ask me to take a look before they did anything with the scammer. Text #stop to the number and it will block them from contacting you any longer via text.

As soon as I offered to set up a time to meet, they just wanted to send a certified check and give me an extra $30 for my trouble. Also claimed to be busy as a Marine (trying to play on my patriotism). Obviously a scammer with terrible grammar!

    2. Hi. My mom was selling an item on Craigslist and experienced this same thing. They were busy as a marine and would send a certified check and add the $30 to "hold" the item. This email was carlottauap5@gmail.com. Unfortunately before I was able to speak with my mom about it they now have her address. She emailed them last night and told them someone was buying it with cash and I just deleted her ad for her. Glad she didn't get any farther with the sale.

Apparently they do this so their "number" on GoogleVoice now forwards to your Google Voice account. So if anyone calls to check if they are a legit buyer, it goes to your number. You probably sound like a normal person, and they reassure the seller this way. The link says how to change it back, also.

After a few texts, he asked if I would remove the ad to reassure him I would hold it for him until he could pay me, and offered an extra $30 to hold it. He then text back a day later saying someone would come to pick it up and he would send me a check and to contact him when the payment had been recieved. Not wanting him to know my home address I gave him my work address. Just recieved the check for $1600... WAY more than I was selling the crib for. Check was from Morehouse College thru Suntrust Bank. I called Suntrust to verify this was a valid and open account and that the funds where in the account. I then asked if I could cash the check there even though I do not have an account thru them, the bank teller told me that as long as I had my id I could cash it or get a certified cashier's check so I knew I would have piece of mind as far as depositing it into my account.... what to do...please help!

    4. NO! DO NOT CASH THE CHECK! The check might be stolen from an account that does have the funds. It will likely clear the bank and you will have sent the item to the "buyer" Later when the owner of the account notices a charge on the account that he did not make he will contact bank, bank will call police and they will trace it to you. You can be prosecuted for fraud, identity theft and theft even though you did not steal the check. The fact that you deposited a check that any reasonable person should know was not on the up and up is enough to get you charged and found guilty of multiple felony property crimes. I know because it happened to me. It was the worst decision I ever made!

  40. Wow! The internet saved my son from being scammed as well. Same scenario! Selling tires on CRAIGSLIST and an interested party offered to purchase them for full price plus kick in extra $50. The scammer stated he was at sea is an oceanographer and he is willing to pay asking price. Stated currently in Wyoming but moving to Michigan soon. He said he will pay by a check as it’s the only way he can pay you. He would make arrangements for pick up after payment has been received. He said you will receive the check soon just need your full name and address. After many text messages asking about the funds it took 2 weeks to get check. Stated FED-EX/USPS was having a problem. We received a check from MOREHOUSE COLLEGE for full amount plus an extra $2000! Checked with SUNTRUST BANK to verify funds….checked out ok. Tracked where package came from, came from New Jersey. Package stated it came from BLUESEA SERVICE in Kansas City, MO. Called our local police department…they simply stated shred the check they will never be able to track who it is because they don’t have a physical address. We will still be posting all over FB and any blog I can find.

  42. On 1/19/2014 My yorkie escaped from my yard. After 12 hours of searching I posted an ad in Craigslist, my mistake being sad and deperate for my family pet I listed my phone number. 5am the next morning I rec'd a TEXT message they said they found my dog and if I sent a picture to confirm it was my dog, they would then send me a security code to continue to communicate with them to retrieve my pet. I never posted anything lost before so thinking this was protocol, I waited, they sent me "google code 77", a few seconds later I rec'd a call from 626-532-7391 recorded GOOGLE VOICE said "enter 2 digit code: after entering code then said state name: of course I did, then it said leave your message. At this time and all night walking my neighborhood looking for my dog I was thinking this was a way to communicate so I left a message about my dog and my phone number again. Then this person continued to txt me telling me they actually traveled with my dog to Texas ( I am in Colorado) and that my dog would be well taken care of, and I freaked out. I said I would fly to get him. Then they said if I could wire them $53 my dog would come to me USPS, then they said sorry they just need the $53 for gas and would drive my dog to my home if I would give them my address. They gave me this information to wire money: Rosaura Barrantes 2207 Cedar Elm Terrace Westlake, TX 76262 At this time I knew I was being scammed. I let them know you can't mail a dog and no need to wire money for gas I was willing to drive and get him and give a $200 CASH reward! I also let them know I contacted Police and they asked what was it all about they have my dog. I said my dog needed medical care and they should take him to a vet and the vet can call me for payment. I never heard back.

Through out that day to this present day 1/30/2014 I have rec'd number of calls relating to this scammer. He/she has contacted many people from Craigslist about their lost wallets or items, via Google Text messaging letting them know he/she has their items and all the scam that goes with it. However, as anyone would they are all desperate to get their items so rather than waiting for more texts they call the number 804-476-2626 and what they hear is ME, my voice from the original "security call from Google number 626-532-7391", where I stated my name and message about my dog, I left my actual number in that voice message in desperation for the safe return of my pet. Well now victims of this scammer from around the USA have been calling me asking if I have information about their lost item posted on Craigslist.

How can I get my voice off this GOOGLE Subscribers number 804-476-2626 original number started at 626-532-7391. I have contacted police and since I am not out money they won't do anything but log this as an incident. Please anyone?

Tired of the calls, can't change my number had for too long use for family and business.

If not, know that GV would let you reclaim (i.e., take) a number from another account. If GV doesn't give you that option, then it is because of 1 of 2 reasons.
    1. The options were used up. GV gives only a certain amounts of reclaims. (Some say it is one)
    2. Your number is the last number in that account. GV would not allow you to remove the last number from an account.

I contacted them and he responds saying they are in 'Phoenix, AZ' and don't live in CA anymore but you can send the money and then they will send the keys/forms to rent. HELL NO!!! My Mom did not raise a Fool! The phone # he is using is 707-243-3167 and they say the property address is 17515 Cohasset St Van Nuys, CA 91406 and when I Googled it (Thank God for Google) according to Zillow real estate website the house does not mention any 'Guest House' on the property. He emailed me some pics (probably fake too). Anyway, just informing you all to be aware.....hope these people get caught. They need to get a JOB AND A LIFE AND STOP SCAMMING PEOPLE.

The person named Rodante, mentioned that he is a humanitarian dealing with third world country poverty issues, relocated in "Phoenix, AZ"... i give him my name and my phone number as well as information on how bad i wanted the property... he gave me the phone number (707) 243-3167 when i called it it ask for my name and a recording....a minute later i received another email about how he appreciate the reply and he would love me to be his tenant.. that i need to inform them how i will pay for the deposit to hold the property... i told them i need the contract face to face... i dont want any communication through email or by phone... by this time i already search the property name and according to zilllow (THANK GOD).. property is off the market... i just want to share my story so everybody is aware that these CRUEL, HEARTLESS, BASTARDS, are taking advantage of the people that doesnt know better...

    2. These guys are still active. Got a weird email from Robert who is "in Phoenix and won't be able to meet face to face." Seemed weird so I started googling. They are using the phone number (707) 243-3167 and email westhillgal@hotmail.com . They had all kinds of good reasons why they aren't in town and can't meet face to face and why they are just looking for a nice person to rent the place.

      Delete
  52. Yup, guy is using the same (707) 243-3167 and westhillgal@hotmail.com, with strange Rent Application Form and really oddly written e-mail. Anyone who rents a place wants to see it, meet the landlord etc. Or, at the very least, a property manager. Typically, when you are renting "in absentia," you hire a property manager to show the property, collect the rent, etc. That's how I have done it in the past. This one (and so many others on Craigslist) reek of fake. There are legit ones too with great prices. That's the hard part. The key is just knowing when to click delete (and add to your spam filter) and move on. If I'm paying you rent, I'm handing you the check, at the property, when you turn over the possession of the rental to me. Not by mail. No way. No how.

  54. I need to add a comment to. I had gotten a job from someone on craiglist looking to hire a person to post ads for rental on craiglist. He goes by Jimmy king rental. I posted for him for a week he did not pay me. I did it for two weeks and realized he wasn't going to pay me. I stopped and started demanded my money. He wanted me to post on sites using my credit card for his business so I started questioning him. He never calls only communicated by text. I kept calling message goes to a Google voice message . I started becoming suspicious when I searched his email and noticed that ppl where not getting the houses as promise. He kept telling them that he was out of town. He made one generic lease agreement. On the lease he tells them where to send the money and that he would send the keys. I felt so awful knowing this man was scamming me and others. He profess to be a Christian. Now I start making it business to inform ppl about him. Never send money to ppl you don't know. I kept calling him and he never return my calls. I ask him for his real estate liscence he would never give me . I started to contact those persons and told them.he was not legit . I also posted ads on craiglist about him. Beware of these ppl. I post ad for a real job instead I got crooks and scammers

    2. Was trying to sell me a 07 Nissan altima for 2000. With just 97k miles, it sounded too good to be true but I texted the number. Mind you she has posted the car ad various of times with different locations, all around the San Diego area. Anyways, after I texted the number she provided i get a reply from "her" from a different area code. Originally the area code was by around where I live but the second number had a Montana area code. Anyways, she told me to email her for details and pictures, so I did. She told me her husband had passed away of a heart attack and her and her daughter wanted to go to Montana to start a new chapter in her life, the car held many memories of her husband so she wanted to get rid of it asap. Obviously I believed it, idk who would lie about something like that, her email contact picture look legit, so I had high hopes. It wasn't until she replied saying she was already in Montana and could send me the car via eBay and she would pay shipping and handling. She directed me to a website that had more pictures of the car and it looked brand new. This is why I'm here now. This saved me from getting scammed 2k!

    6. Good morning Anthony,

The car is already at the shipping company in Amazon's custody with all the papers in Great Falls, MT. The delivery process will be managed by me and I think I can have it there at your home address within 3-4 working days. Because it is a large transaction, we will complete the deal only using an authorized third part like Amazon because I already prearranged the whole process with them. The money must be sent to an Amazon account and will be kept safe until the buyer receives and inspects the car. I am an Amazon member and using this service you will get a 5 days testing period after delivery. During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money from Amazon. Please take into consideration that I will get paid only after you receive the car and make sure everything is as agreed. If you don't like it and want to return it, you can cancel the payment and I will arrange to ship it back (on my costs) and you will be 100% refunded by Amazon.
If interested please include in your next email your contact info for Amazon (full name, shipping address and phone#), so I can notify Amazon that you are selected as my buyer and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure.
Thanks, hope to do business with you soon.

      Roberta

    1. I fell for this one today, all my hard earned money is now gone. I feel like a complete idiot. I was so stupid, I just want my money back. I put my back into that hard earned money to buy a vehicle for me and my son...I wish they'd understand how bad they hurt ppl not for the money they steal but for our dignity and the way they trample it. My heart is completely broken.

  89. First of all you need to make the payment to Amazon Safepay, the funds will be placed on hold into their account. Then the shipping will start and the car will arrive at your location in max 48hrs. Then you will have 5 days testing period. If you will decide to keep the car, you should call Amazon to confirm them and they will release the funds to me. If not, you can ship it back, i will pay for the returning fees and you will get your money back in 12hrs. I hope you understand how it works.
So if you wanna purchase my car, just get back to me with your full name, full shipping address and phone # and Amazon will send you the invoice. There you will find all the steps you need to follow in order to make the payment.

  95. Got this scam email:
"Roberta Bunker" email scam using gmail account:

Thank you for contacting me about my 2007 Acura MDX 3.7L V6 that I have for sale. This vehicle is in great shape (110,000 miles, Engine: 3664cc V6, AWD, Automatic, VIN# 2HNYD28307H519227). It has no damage, no scratches or dents, no hidden defects. It is in immaculate condition, meticulously maintained and hasn't been involved in any accident...I do have the title, clear. I am selling it at this final price of $2,500 because my husband died 1 month ago (he had a heart attack) and it brings me bad memories and I, along with my daughter decided to sell the house and so we moved in Montana trying to start a new life. That's the reason why I want to sell it asap and my last price is $2,500 including delivery to your home address.
Let me know if you are interested, email me back.
I have attached the pics below...

    Thank you,
    Roberta Bunker

  110. 1-317-649-8113, she is suppose to being selling a camper, you can tell it's a scam the camper looks brand new it's a 2007 Keystone Outback BH, only 2500.00 but she needs your email to send you more pictures and where it's located, she tells me she cannot send through message on the phone because she doesn't have a smartphone. Pushing further I told her just to let me know where it is and I will come look at it and if I want it I'd buy it, her next message to me was this
The last price it's $ 2.500 but I told you for more information about the rv give me your email address and I will send you there
    This was my response
Why do you need my email address to send me there, that can be done right through this message. This is a scam, and I am going to report it as such. Oh I am also blocking you.
