Opinions on new Craigslist email relay?

Any readers have a strong opinion on Craigslist's new email relay system?

It may just be my imagination, but it seems the number of scam emails I receive on a daily basis have gone down.  Of course, these con artists are finding ways around the new system, so here's some info I've collected from those who are scheming and scamming by sending their direct email addresses or phone numbers in the initial email inquiry:

mbf230@gmail.com
jjjimjimjim276@gmail.com
blakewire@gmail.com
ainamksmikeso1@gmail.com
contactus@workwithusatyourpeak.org
lisamackinney8@gmail.com
johnsonblake73@gmail.com
Leardvo36@hotmail.com

(770) 810-5029
(347) 559-6916
(540) 692-9159
(601) 879-4652
(864) 660-9302

If they do not send an email address or phone number, they will ask for your's. You'll notice that the new preferred method of these scammers is to ask directly for your contact information to get around the email relay system to avoid detection by Craigslist.  Here's an example:

Hello,

Do you still have this?please let me know as soon as possible? I have a speech disability so you can best reach me via email, always with my computer :)

PS:Shoot me an email back soon.with your email address and  cell #

Lisa

Avoid being scammed by corresponding through email with potential buyers for a bit until you get a better sense of the person. Scammers are quick to respond with their sob story about being out of the country and needing to send it to LaLa Land, so this should help to weed them out. Until next time, Happy Craigslisting! :)

Scammers still finding ways to scam around new changes

With the new changes Craigslist has implemented, the scammers have found workarounds to avoid being detected. One of their new methods is to request your personal email address, instead of corresponding through the original Craigslist email.

Real examples:

I received an email from saragabb: to make this deal fast send me your personal email address so as to chat better.

Here's another one I received: Please I have interest in your item but craiglist does not delivered back to my email directly, please could you send me your email that i can reach you so that i will contact you now for further inquiry

And another: Excessive number of bots and I am aggravated. Confirm u're for real by answering back to my confidential e-mail address to make a deal it is Stocktonhn90@hotmail.com

They keep coming: I saw your item  posted on craigslist. I am very interested, also i have some Question to ask about it Please let me know soon. PLS KINDLY GET BACK TO ME WITH YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS

It doesn't stop: If u're not a fake write to me to my email address so I can trust you. It's Wanr0@hotmail.com

Seriously(!!): I am interested in this. Kindly get back to me with your email address so we can strike a deal.

And again: Your email came as anonymous please reply with your email so that we can start correspondence from there thanks

Please continue to help the Craigslist community by flagging these types of emails as scam.  You can do so by clicking the last link at the bottom of the email that says Please flag unwanted messages (spam, scam, other)

IMPORTANT CRAIGSLIST CHANGES!

Craigslist has changed its website so that emails are no longer direct between buyers and sellers.  For those of you selling on Craigslist, this new change means that any email from a potential buyer does not include their actual email address.  Instead, you will find a bunch of numbers and letters "@reply.craigslist.org".

For more information about this email-relay, please read the information from Craigslist itself: http://www.craigslist.org/about/help/email-relay

With this change, there is an additional tweak that will be very useful to the Craigslist community.  When a would-be scammer emails you, you can now flag that email via Craigslist.  At the very bottom of the email, you will see "If this email is a scam or spam please flag it now".  Simply click that link.  With enough flags, these individuals will be filtered out.  This is great news as it means that eventually these scammers have no incentive to keep going if they are continuously flagged by real users.

As always, please be cautious with the site as the new changes do not guarantee that all scammers are weeded out!

The list goes on...

You can sidestep would-be scammers by following these common-sense rules whenever using craigslist:
  • DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.
  • NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is likely a scammer.
  • FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.
  • CRAIGSLIST IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection" or "seller certification"
  • NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.)
  • AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.
  • DO NOT RENT HOUSING WITHOUT SEEING THE INTERIOR, OR PURCHASE EXPENSIVE ITEMS SIGHT-UNSEEN - in all likelihood that housing unit is not actually for rent and that cheap item does not exist.
  • DO NOT SUBMIT TO CREDIT CHECKS OR BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR A JOB OR FOR HOUSING UNTIL YOU HAVE MET THE INTERVIEWER OR LANDLORD/AGENT IN PERSON.

Happy 2013!

Hello readers, apologies for not updating sooner in 2013. I've been busy with the holidays and what not. I've had several encouraging comments telling me that this blog helped to stop some readers from getting scammed so I will make it a point to update more regularly. There seems to be one common denominator for the readers who almost got scammed: they had a funny feeling/something felt off and they went with their gut and just googled it to end up at this blog. Life pro tip: when in doubt, GOOGLE!

So here's my latest list of scammers:
